EVERYTIME & EVERY TIME

Updated: Jun 4, 2022

First of all, "everytime" is an incorrect word, although "every time" is correct.

Native American English speakers often use everytime as a synonym for whenever as in "Everytime I'm hungry, I eat some sausages". This usage has been in practice for ages that they write it as a single word consequently.

Every time is a different story. While some compound words like everywhere, everyday, and everyone have become commonplace in the English language, every time is not considered an acceptable compound one. Every time is two separate words meaning every occasions, or all occurrences. For example: "Every time I see her, I have a gut feeling that she loves me".

So, every time you see everytime in a sentence, you should know the former is correct and the latter is a pseudo one.

Thanks to a student of mine, whose writing inspired me to start this very first of its kind, but definitely not the last.
